You came here as an excited soul - eager to experience earth. What happened? How can you get back there?
Disclaimer: if you have NOT watched Soul the Disney Movie, then do not read this article unless you like spoilers. Either way there will be insight for you to take into consideration what watching this movie from a conscious lens.
What am I here to do? Am I good at anything? Everyone around me thinks I can’t. I am not good enough. They told me I can’t do it. Any of this, sounds familiar? We can all relate to 22’s struggle to assimilate despite her epic soulmates being among Mother Teresa, Ghandi and the like. (Yes, I'll be referring to 22 as a she for ease of understanding) She is deeply seating in the fear of unworthiness, uncertainty and the darkness of unawareness. It wasn’t until she met Joe, where she learned of the antidote.
The greatest antidote to fear is love. The love of simplicity It’s okay to fear. Our ego is hardwired to keep us safe and comfortable. Yet growth comes when you feel uncomfortable and safe in the pursuit of personal expression. The Disney Movie Soul is a profound take on life before Earth from the nuanced perspective of a Soul’s journey with and without the sacred vehicle of the body. A journey towards love from fear.
In this post, I’ll be sharing my key insights on this beautifully animated Disney film, Soul, through these overarching themes from a spiritual, metaphysical and philosophical lens.
- Soulmates are our guides
- The Expectation of others
- Accepting the Cycle of Life and Death
- Earth as a place for Experience
- Your Spark, what you’re looking for
Soulmates are our guides
The idea of romantic love greatly diminishes the moments to be cherished in the relationships with every human we meet. No matter how small the interaction. Each human being that we interact with has come into our reality with something to teach us. When we come into our relationships from this level of awareness, it opens up a new frame of interactions with others.
The idea of soulmates was beautifully expressed as each soul being paired with another soul who had already experienced life on Earth. They were being paired with new souls as their on the ‘other side’ of life on Earth [ pre-death] before they traveled to the Great Beyond. 22 struggled with these soul mate relationships because she didn’t meet herself yet. The part of her that so desperately wanted to be expressed.
As energy is not created nor destroyed, many human beings have experienced Earth and other planets multiple lifetimes. Our soulmates here can guide us to lessons, realizations and soul altering experiences. Willingness to learn is the only prerequisite.
The Expectations of Others
An opinion is simply a different perspective. Everyone has one. There is a difference between taking a perspective into consideration and putting it on a pedestal as a validating tool. When we use other’s expectations as a validating tool, this gives everyone with an opinion to see how we ‘measure up’. When we do this, we give our power away - this is where manipulation and control take root in the psyche.
Yet this is not the true nature of things. Nature unfolds in a cyclical pattern with flow and not force. Not seeking the perfection but the divinity of existence. By molding our identity/actions towards others expectations, we betray ourselves - our self expression.
Oftentimes expectations do leave any room for what is unfolding now. Other people may expect you to do, be or have certain things - yet they don’t have any real time info. Only you are on the leading edge of your life. The leading edge is the connection between your heart and mind. Where are you being led. 22 had to understand that being on earth was simply a chance to BE more of who she is. By coming into this knowing - with the help of Joe’s love - she came back home to herself.
The other day I saw a beautiful note on here that said ‘The people that are attracted to your light are not always the ones that can also hold your darkness.’
As individualized aspects of Source - the ALL pervading presence within all things - soul cultivation is holding all parts of ourselves both light and dark with love. This takes a tremendous amount of presence. Others in our lives may have the capacity to move through the darkness with us while basking in our light. Some may not. When Joe realized the duality within his own consciousness, he was ready to hold space for the darkness within 22 with compassion, empathy and understanding.

Accept the Cycle of Life and Death
Acceptance is the gateway to more life. We are made of eternal energy that simply shifts form. We experience a shift through this gateway via Death. Just as birth is the gateway to the human form. Through Joe’s journey, when we peak into his life we see moments filled with deep emotions, heartfelt inspiration and pain. We see the beauty in the ‘mundane’ simplicity of life. After this reflection, he realized that while he was chasing his dream - he actually had such a full life.
Overjoyed and running through the busy streets of New York City Joe finally landed his first big gig at a jazz spot. He said that ‘if I die today I’d die a very happy man.’ Little did he know, he would be facing his words head on. Traveling quickly to the space between life and death, he enters the world of his souls first steps. Faced with the ego-sobering reality of the Great Beyond, Death, Joe couldn’t come to terms with his untimely exit.
We can’t accept death if we haven’t accepted life. Not fully accepting our Souls expression on earth. Living with the audacity that we’ll have more time. So DO the thing. So BE the one. You can’t fully live if you fear the absence of life itself. You are meant to exist … and experience.
Earth is a place for experience
All the souls collectively gather in the Earth museum to see what they would like to be, do, see and experience on Earth. Each eager to navigate the diversity of activities. This is a refreshing perspective of pre-Earth, because it reframes our time here as a choice NOT a punishment.
We are souls here moving with free will to engage, become, act on whatever moves us in the moment. We have so much free will that we can even deny our own divinity. We like to define everything - good, bad, light dark, funny, boring, illuminating, scarring. Earth is a place to define things, a place of illusions and duality. Yet all of us on a Soul level know that we are here to simply experience. Even with the duality, the experience here on Earth cultivates Soul Mastery.
Your Spark
Oh, us humans and our passions.
Some of us fall in love with one thing, whether it’s music, art, business, medicine. For others, like myself, you fall in love with multiple things like sports, finance, singing or even marketing. Passion is the sauce but not the meal. The meal is in the experience and journey towards and within the passion. At the You Seminar, the Jerry’s were helping the souls reach this profound truth on the ‘purpose’ of existence on Earth.
It wasn’t until 22 experienced life on earth in Joe’s body that she was inspired to live. She realized the simplest meaning of life is to be in her love with her very existence. ‘I am so good at walking. Eating pizza yah I’m good at that too. Maybe I can sit and look at the sky.’ She really reminds me of how pure and innocent children are because of their close proximity to the spirit realm (even if it isn’t the You Seminar).
There can be joy found in everything. Joe learns this lesson after he returns to his body and realizes that the ‘peak’ he was chasing didn't feel like he expected. After his major jazz gig with Dorothea Williams, he shared this sentiment. She responded, “I heard this story about a fish. He swims up to this older fish and says, "I'm trying to find this thing they call the ocean." "The ocean?" says the older fish. "That's what you're in right now." "This?" says the young fish. "This is water. What I want is the ocean."
Where you are has all the magic. You are the spark that your’e looking for. Where you are is actually where you want to be - you simply are searching for a new perspective of the same thing. Sometimes you search in material things. Sometimes you search in other people. Sometimes you search in an activity or job. Yet it’s how you do it. It’s who you are while doing it. It’s knowing the good stuff is already here. Many realize this once they are older fish. Yet wisdom is cultivating the understanding that you are already in the ocean.
It is we, who are meant to give meaning to life.
The biggest lesson that Soul taught me - I am my spark. I am the magic. I am the inspiration. I find it through living. I find it through accepting. I find it through being. When we embrace the simplicity - we are the freest. I set my self free through acceptance.
The meaning of life is found through living deeply.
